Angi, Thumbtack and Google LSA leads each need a different response
Angi, Thumbtack and Google Local Services Ads should not share one follow-up workflow. Route Angi as broadcast-style matching, Thumbtack as customer-selected but competitive, and Google LSA as profile-selected contact that can also affect ad performance.
None of these platforms promises that an ordinary lead is exclusive. That simple shared-versus-exclusive label misses the real difference. Angi may match one request with several pros. A Thumbtack customer selects your profile but may select other pros too. An LSA customer also selects a particular profile, while remaining free to contact other advertisers.
The source should determine who gets alerted, what the first response says, which policy deadline starts, and what evidence is saved. One generic automation cannot do all of that properly.
What is actually different between the three lead sources?
The useful distinction is broadcast-style matching versus customer-selected contact. Cost and credit rules matter too. Here is the working comparison.
| Platform | Lead type | Cost basis | Exclusivity | Response window | Dispute or refund policy | Policy date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angi | Automatically supplied lead, or an Opportunity that becomes a charged lead after the homeowner and pro both show interest | Per lead, prepaid subscription, or lead bundle. Price varies by task, location, and demand. | Not exclusive. Angi said a request could be matched with no more than five pros as of April 20, 2026. That is a maximum, not an average, and the actual number can be lower. | No documented expiration. Angi says to follow up quickly. For a credit request, the pro generally should have attempted a call within 24 hours as of August 14, 2026. That is a credit condition, not proof the lead becomes worthless after 24 hours. | A request generally must be filed within 45 days as of August 14, 2026. Listed reasons include invalid contact information, wrong location, service mismatch, a duplicate within 45 days, or delivery while paused. Approval is not guaranteed. | Help pages dated April 20 and August 14, 2026; current 2026 agreement retrieved September 21, 2026, with its exact effective day not clearly exposed |
| Thumbtack | Direct lead from a customer who selected the pro | $0 membership or annual fee as of September 21, 2026. The pro pays when contacted and controls budget and maximum lead prices. | Not exclusive. Thumbtack promises limited competition, but customers can contact several pros. No current numeric maximum was verified. | No hard expiration was found. Thumbtack says to reply quickly. An official administrator recommended under one business hour as of July 2025, based on an association with more hires. Thumbtack did not publish the sample, effect size, or methodology. | Fees are final and non-refundable except under the separate refund policy. Official staff said customer nonresponse is not refundable. The complete current eligibility list and filing deadline could not be retrieved publicly. | Terms updated July 10, 2026; operating guidance retrieved September 21, 2026 |
| Google LSA | Call, message, or booking lead after a customer selects a particular advertiser profile | Charged per valid lead, not per click. Price varies by location, job type, lead type, and bidding mode. | Customer-selected, but not guaranteed exclusive. The customer can contact other LSA advertisers. A direct branded search is different because only that business's LSA ad is displayed. | No hard expiration. Google recommends responding as soon as possible. Repeated failures to answer or reply can affect ranking. | US and Canadian advertisers can dispute an invalid lead within 30 days as of September 21, 2026. Google also assesses leads automatically and says most automated credits are applied within 30 days, although the original charge remains on the invoice. | Documentation retrieved September 21, 2026 |
No current public dollar price by trade, ZIP code, or lead type was verified for any of the three platforms. Use the actual charge from your account when comparing results. Generic claims about what an HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, or remodeling lead “usually costs” are not supported by this research.
How should an Angi lead be handled?
An Angi lead needs a competition-first workflow and a policy record.
First, separate an automatically supplied lead from an Opportunity. Angi says a pro can review an Opportunity and its fee before expressing interest. It becomes a charged lead after mutual interest. Subscription customers may instead receive leads automatically under their agreement. Treating those as one identical product hides a useful difference before the first call is made.
When the lead becomes actionable, alert the person responsible for new work. Show the requested service, location, contact details, lead type, delivery time, and charge when available. The office should not have to open several systems to understand what arrived.
Record the first attempted call. Angi's credit policy said as of August 14, 2026, that the pro generally should have tried to call within 24 hours. If the number is invalid, the location is wrong, the service does not match, or the lead is a recent duplicate, save that evidence while it is easy to find.
The same policy gave a 45-day filing window as of August 14, 2026. Angi said it reviews requests within five business days, but review does not guarantee approval. Issued credits apply to future lead charges and expire after six months. Leads supplied under an annual subscription may not be eligible, so the signed account agreement controls that branch of the workflow.
Do not file a credit merely because the homeowner did not answer, hired another pro, postponed the project, collected quotes, or rejected your quote. Angi specifically lists those sales outcomes as excluded.
How should a Thumbtack lead be handled?
A Thumbtack lead needs a selection-aware response. The customer has already chosen to contact your profile. The opening message should therefore respond to the job they described, not introduce the company as if this were an unqualified cold list.
Thumbtack's own material says customers view matching pros and contact the ones they like. That is stronger intent than an automatic broadcast, but it is not exclusivity. Thumbtack says competition is limited, while its community guidance says customers are often comparing several pros. No reliable current cap on how many pros a customer may contact was found.
Use under one business hour as the internal target when the office is staffed. As of July 2025, an official Thumbtack community administrator said replies below that point were statistically associated with more hires. That is useful platform guidance, not a proven deadline. There was no published sample or measured conversion loss for contractors who replied later.
A quick, relevant reply is better than an instant message that ignores the request. Include the requested service and a clear next step. Route replies back to the person who can qualify or schedule the work.
Do not build the workflow around an assumption that a silent customer will produce a refund. Thumbtack's terms updated July 10, 2026, establish that fees are final and non-refundable except where its separate refund policy applies. Official community staff also say nonresponse does not qualify.
How should a Google LSA lead be handled?
An LSA lead needs channel-aware routing and response tracking.
The customer selected your LSA profile before calling, messaging, or booking. Send calls to the team that can answer for the business shown in the ad. Send messages into a queue that is actively watched. Keep the business identity consistent with the advertiser profile.
Google says consistently fast responses can improve ranking and the ability to receive leads. Repeated failures to answer calls or messages may hurt ranking. This makes an unanswered LSA message more than an isolated office problem. It can become an advertising-account problem too.
Google may show a message response-time estimate after the advertiser has received at least two message leads during the previous 90 days, as of September 21, 2026. The displayed estimate can range from a few minutes to one day. It is a weighted history for messages, not a deadline or promise about the next lead.
Start a 30-day dispute clock when the lead arrives. Save the call or message record and the reason for any dispute. Google says job types you do not service and locations you do not service are no longer credit reasons, so account targeting needs attention before those contacts arrive.
Direct branded-search leads deserve their own label. Google says that when someone searches directly for the business or brand, that advertiser's ad is the only LSA ad displayed, and the advertiser is charged only for leads identified as new customers. That contact is materially different from an ordinary category search, even though the customer can still use another channel afterward.
Does the fastest response always win?
No retrieved study established that the fastest contractor always wins after accounting for price, reviews, service fit, or message quality. There is also no verified universal minute when a lead from any of these platforms becomes commercially worthless.
Speed still matters because each platform tells pros to respond quickly, Angi connects a 24-hour call attempt to credit requests, and Google connects response behavior to ranking. But speed does not excuse a useless response.
In our assessment, the correct operating goal is the fastest accurate response your office can sustain. The separate question of very short response times belongs in “Speed to lead: why sixty seconds decides who wins the job.”
What are you allowed to automate?
Paying for a lead does not create permission for unlimited or unrelated follow-up.
- Angi requires communications to follow calling, texting, email, and do-not-call laws. Its agreement also prohibits selling or transferring leads and using unrelated parties to contact or serve the homeowner.
- Thumbtack's terms require communication opt-outs to be honored and limit consumer information to the relevant service request in the situations its terms describe.
- Google's LSA policy prohibits selling or passing a lead to another business. The advertiser or vetted technicians representing that company must fulfill it.
Automation should identify the source, create the record, notify the right person, support the requested service, and stop when the customer opts out. It should not hide the business identity or turn one service request into unrelated solicitation.
If calls go unanswered, “Missed call text back: the simplest automation that pays for itself” covers that specific workflow. If you are deciding whether AI should handle the first conversation, see “Should a robot answer your phone? An honest answer.”
What should source-based routing look like?
The CRM should create a separate entry point for each platform. The follow-up can still live in one system, but the source must control the path.
- Angi: Mark automatic lead or Opportunity, alert the office, log the call attempt, preserve defect evidence, and start the 45-day credit clock.
- Thumbtack: Show the customer's request, prompt a personal response, target under one business hour when staffed, and do not treat silence as a refundable defect.
- Google LSA: Route calls and messages separately, preserve the advertised identity, track whether the lead was answered, mark direct branded searches, and start the 30-day dispute clock.
“GoHighLevel for contractors: what it actually does, and what it doesn't” explains the platform rather than this source logic. The software can hold the workflows, but it still needs someone to configure, monitor, and correct them.
Report the source, charge, appointment, estimate, sale, and any credit together. The deeper argument for judging channels by sold work rather than cheap inquiries belongs in “Cost per lead is lying to you. Track cost per sold job.”
What should you change first?
Stop sending all three sources into one unlabeled “new lead” workflow. Add the source, lead subtype, arrival time, response status, charge, dispute deadline, and outcome to the record. Then give Angi, Thumbtack, and Google LSA their own routing rules.
